Tele Slug

Week 29 Tele Slug

That's right, I am a former banana slug from UCSC (pictured on left in my school uniform - No grades thank you!) This week's song comes from an old recording I found of the Tele-Slug telephone enrollment system that they started using my last year there. I love the way really old phone tree voices would say numbers and days of the week. I am sure this is all done online now.

Why on earth did you have a recording of teleslug? This brings back weird memories of enrolling by phone. This was back when email was a novel concept and you had to go down to the unix terminal basement of the college and learn weird Unix syntax to check mail. I had Windows 3x on my totally unwired computer at the time. This was only about 10 years ago. Holy crap.

I recorded that call because I always loved the way “phone tree” systems sounded back then when they read numbers or days. The sentences were always really choppy and stilted. And the Tele-Slug voice was just such an over the top cheerful-helpful voice that I felt it needed to be shared. I am sure Tele-slug was something they spent a lot of money to implement and it was probably obsolete before it was even installed. And those bulky Unix terminals that you refered to have probably been ground up and used as landfill for a new parking lot on campus.
