Week 42 Fade To Black I was on my way to California when my friend Cheryl called me to tell me the news that Elliott Smith had killed himself. I have been a fan of his music and was very sad to think that he would never write another song. This song falls in between a tribute and admonishment against him taking his own life. If you haven't heard any of Elliott Smith's music, I strongly reccomend you take a listen. I think my favorite album is Either/Or. LYRICS ©2003 Brandon MacInnis and Quirky Works. Very well done tribute to Elliott. Many references in the lyrics and music that I liked. I now agree with you, this is better than a cover song.
Posted by: lowx at December 19, 2003 12:40 AMOK I am a double posting nerd. This song makes me hecka sad. Somehow you managed to sing like Elliott a bit on this one. Hard to do-- his voice is very distinct.
It sounds to me like the blog songs are evolving a bit and becoming more complex. Maybe that's my inner pencil necked fan boy commenting on lush walls of sound in the new Eels release, or whatever. Huh???
Posted by: lowx at December 19, 2003 12:45 AMThank you for the comments. Yes, I did try to sing a bit like Elliott on this one. I could definitely hear him singing it in my head, but my own voice couldn't quite capture this.
And yes, the blog songs have been slowly taking on complexity over the course of the year. That is not your imagination. That is why I removed the bit that used to be on the intro about trying to do all of these songs in 5 hours. After about song 20, they have all take longer than that and some have taken considerably longer (Fade to Black for Instance). That is why I think I will switch to a monthly format after this year.
Does anyone know when the music Elliott Smith was working on will be released? Sad to think that will be the last of it, but I am looking forward to it anyway.
