Dear Listener,
Well, 2003 has been one helluva of a ride! And I thank you all for coming
along. This is the 49th and final song of the year. But I’m sure
you’re saying to yourself, “shouldn’t there be 52
songs what with there being 52 weeks in a year?” Well, I started
on the 4th week of January so, no.
In 2003, We lost Dolly the first cloned mammal. She will be missed.
We successfully managed to secure a source of oil - only loosing about
10,000 lives in the process. This year saw several zoo-related incidents
make their way into songs. A purple polar bear in Argentina and Little
Joe the escaped gorilla in Boston
And together we explored many topics ranging from the increasingly annoying
problem of spam to the ever-present specter of laziness. We learned
that work sucks (though I am betting some of you might have figured
that out all on your own). We heard a song by a USB key and a microbe
that lives in rock many miles below the earth, as well as a song about
a fake Christmas tree named Albert. From the world of science we explored
the number 13, black holes, helium, and the through time traveling ability
of the flux capacitor I was able to record a song with the former me
in the year 1989.
We had a few guest musicians and I’d like to thank them all for
lending their musical talents to the effort (including my grandfather
who was unaware he was a featured singer). And I’d like to thank
my dog Tasha who played her collar on The Sky Is Falling and sang backup
on my cover of Kid Fears. And thanks to Courtney and Raven for their
winning entries resulting in the tongue-twisting life is a rock but
the radio rolled me done in the style of Soul Coughing. And thanks to
everyone who contributed rhymes for Random Memorandum.
Of course 2003 will probably be best remembered as the thirteen-year
anniversary of 1990, but to me, it will be the year I wrote and recorded
49 songs. Yeah, I know there were a couple of covers and I thank those
songwriters for writing them. And thank them for not suing me (at least
not yet).
So thank you all for listening and as you make your new year’s
resolutions for 2004 remember, as my good friend Cheryl said, “if
not 2k4, 2kwhen?”
Sincerely,
Brandon
